The Dexter is a dual purpose breed with both beef and dairy qualities. In judging, both these qualities will be taken into consideration.The Dexter originated in the South Western region of Ireland. Like the Kerry, they are descended from the predominately black cattle of the early Celts.

British Limousin is the largest numerical beef breed in the United Kingdom accounting for 34% of the 1.9 million cattle registered with the British Cattle Movement Service. Each year over 640,000 Limousin sired cattle are registered representing an annual industry value of around £400 million. In the twelve years since BCMS was established, more than 7 million calves, sired by Limousin bulls, have been registered.

The Shorthorn breed of cattle, which we know today, has evolved over the last two centuries, from Teeswater and Durham cattle found originally in the North East of England. In the late 18th Century two brothers, Charles and Robert Colling started to improve these Durham cattle using line breeding techniques established so successfully by Robert Bakewell on Longhorn cattle

The Whitebred Shorthorn is a completely seperate breed from the Beef Shorthorn or Dairy Shorthorn. Whitebred Shorthorns are bred mainly in the border counties of England and Scotland, and although the origin of the breed is somewhat obscure, it is likely that they were derived from the white dual purpose Shorthorn cattle, locally known as the Cumberland Shorthorn.
