20 Reasons to Buy a Polytunnel

20 Reasons to Buy a Polytunnel

1.       Warmer Growing Environment

A Polytunnel can bring a Mediterranean or even Tropical climate to your UK garden.

2.       Extended Growing Season

Growing in a Polytunnel can extend the season from May to mid-Autumn.

The amateur gardener can produce a range of plants in his garden Polytunnel which would not normally flourish in the UK.

3.       Reliable Conditions and Harvests

A Polytunnel puts you in control of nature… Weather, watering, and ventilation are all under your control.

4.       Much Cheaper than a Greenhouse

Polytunnels were originally designed as a cost effective replacement for glasshouses and this still holds good today with the equivalent cost per square metre/foot of floor area considerably less.

At only a third of the cost of a glasshouse a Polytunnel is excellent value for money. Just think, instead of an 8ft x 10ft glasshouse you can have a 12ft x 20ft Polytunnel and no there is no need for a costly base to stand it on.

5.       Many Size Options

Polytunnels have quickly become the structure of choice for everyone, from the hobby gardener in his smaller 6ft wide garden Polytunnel to the commercial grower in his larger 24ft wide field Polytunnel.

Garden Polytunnels at Premier Polytunnels start at 6ft wide x 8ft long – an ideal size for the first time amateur gardener.

6.       No Planning Permission

Normally you do not need planning permission for a domestic size/garden Polytunnel – Please visit the Q&A page of Premier Polytunnels’ website at http://www.premierpolytunnels.co.uk for further details about the permitted development regulations.

If you want to build a large commercial Polytunnel or more than one tunnel, or if you have any queries or questions, please contact your local planning department for further advice.

7.       Simple Construction

A Polytunnel is not a difficult structure to build - Constructing a standard garden Polytunnel really is a two person job for a still, warm weekend.

Premier Polytunnels are proud to be the only Polytunnel company to offer an out of hours Construction Advice Helpine, 7 days a week until 9pm.

8.       Improved Design

There is a continuous development in the commercial and garden Polytunnel, and especially in Polytunnel covers of which Premier Polytunnels are at the leading edge.

9.       Can be Moved and Extended

Crop rotation and good garden hygience should be enough to keep the soil in your Polytunnel problem-free, but if not, the Polytunnel can be moved to a new site.

A Polytunnel can be moved and extended, although Premier Polytunnels would suggest this is done when the polythene cover requires replacing in order to keep costs down.

10.   Stands up to High Winds

It is a common misconception that a piece of polythene stretched over a frame could never resist a British winter. Commercial growers, whose livelihoods depend on Polytunnels, would not accept a structure that disappeared over the nearest hill just when their tender shoots are at their most susceptible. If constructed according to the instructions, a Polytunnel will give many years of uninterrupted use. When constructing a Polytunnel it is important to ensure that the framework is well anchored to the ground and, most importantly, that the polythene cover is tight - Everything else has a huge margin for error.

11.   Good for Sloping Ground

Greenhouses often struggle on a ground that is not perfectly level. Polytunnels, on the other hand, can cope with a gentle slope.

Approximately 6-inch out of level can be taken up by adjusting the foundation tubes of your Polytunnel. A slope from end to end does not have to be taken into account as your Polytunnel can be built straight onto this slope with the framework placed at the vertical.

12.   More Standing Space

In the past Polytunnel hoops were completely semi-circle in shape, leaving little vertical room at the sides.

‘Premier’ Polytunnels are designed with no less than 3ft straight sides before the start of the gentle curve of the roof, allowing for plant growth right up the edge, even when using staging, together with ample headroom and a comfortable working area.

13.   Great Ventilation

In the height of summer plants growing under cover can suffer in the heat. Garden Polytunnels are usually supplied with ventilation netting in the top half of the door at each end of the tunnel to encourage air circulation. Side ventilation is also available (for one or both sides), with the option to use a polythene vent screen for when the colder months creep up on us.

14.   Keep Insects Out – Or In!

By using one complete sheet of polythene to cover the whole structure, Polytunnels not only offer reduced draughts – They also prevent greedy pests getting in and feasting on your crops! However, if you want to invite some beneficial wildlife inside, simply open the Polytunnel’s doors.

15.   Spoilt for Choice

There are various Polytunnel accessories and additions available, allowing you to enhance and customise your own tunnel, such as Crop Bars, Staging Supports, Ground Cover, and Irrigation.

16.   Long-Lasting Polythene Covers

The polythene cover will need replacing periodically, although the polythene supplied by Premier Polytunnels has been developed with resistance against polythene’s deadliest enemy – sunlight. The additives in a Polytunnel cover prevent UV degradation for up to 4-5 years and it is not uncommon for a cover to last 8-10 years. The cost of a replacement cover is minimal.

17.    All Year Round Growing

A Polytunnel offers protection from light frost, allowing you to enjoy a selection of winter salads crops, plus leafy crops at the coldest times of year.

Bubble wrap insulation is ideal for ‘sealing’ your Polytunnel during the colder months.

The use of a Polythene Cloche inside the Polytunnel is ideal for ‘double glazing’ the Polytunnel, keeping the frost off your plants and saving on heating costs.

18.   Plenty to Harvest in Winter

If you want to try your hand at producing some of the more unusual overwintering veg, a heater is often an essential investment.

Save money on your heating bills by dividing the Polytunnel into smaller sections (try hanging polythene inside) and heat one section at a time.

19.   Multifunctional

A Polytunnel is designed for use as a plastic greenhouse and should be used to nurture plants just as you would in a glasshouse. However, over the years their uses have covered a multiple of customer requirements and, if you can think of anything that requires protection from the elements, then a Polytunnel is an economical alternative. Swimming pool covers and sheep housing are a popular alternative.

20.   Lifestyle

In a ‘Premier’ Polytunnel Spring begins earlier and Winter is kept outdoors, so why not get the whole family involved and start enjoying the advantages of a healthy, self-sufficient lifestyle today!
