As the national headlines bring a rain cloud of doom to the UK, Premier Polytunnels have some good news to brighten up your year!
The national news has been all doom and gloom so far this year, with stories of UK families’ food bills rocketing as prices continue to rise at nearly twice the rate of inflation, with some basic foods costing double what they did Research (for the Sunday Mirror newspaper) revealed that a weekly shop of £52.48 is a punishing 6% more expensive, yet inflation stands at 3.7%. Some of the biggest price increases were tinned tomatoes up 102%, flour up 53%, and orange juice up 29%. A report by Foresight, a leading Government think-tank, called for “urgent action” to prevent food shortages as food prices are set to soar by 50% over the next decade, with prices in the UK for basics such as bread, rice, and milk expected to spiral to inflation-busting record prices. It also called for a crackdown on food waste as a typical British household wastes £500-£700 a year on food that they buy and then throw away. Foresight’s report (reported by the Mail Online) said that last month the price of cereals, sugar, and meat soared on the world’s markets after a series of crop failures caused by bad weather. But here’s the good news… Premier Polytunnels can help you save money AND reduce your carbon footprint! A polytunnel is the most useful structure you can put in your garden, and is certainly the best tool that a vegetable gardener can have – And bad weather outside doesn’t matter! A polytunnel allows you to grow your own food all year round. In Spring you can sow early crops of lettuces, carrots, and herbs, and Summer is the ideal time for all the half-hardy plants such as aubergines, cucumbers, peppers, chillies, and tomatoes, as well as the more tender herbs such as basil and coriander. In Autumn, winter salads, overwintering brassicas, and oriental greens are ideal, and in Winter you can sow onions and enjoy “cut and come again” leaves, spinach, and chard. Peaches and nectarines can also be brought inside the polytunnel to avoid the disease, peach leaf curl. The benefits to growing your own fruit, veg, and herbs are great – you’ll save the cost of buying the food, cut the carbon emissions involved in transportation and packaging of shop-bought goods, and have the satisfaction of eating what you’ve sown. Home-grown foods are also tastier and higher in vitamins. The Energy Saving Trust also recommends saving money by keeping a composting container in the kitchen and filling it with teabags, fruit and veg skins and pips, and egg shells – These will decompose to make a nutrient-rich feeder for your plants.
