Description:

The British Hen Welfare Trust (formerly the Battery Hen Welfare Trust) is a national charity that re-homes commercial laying hens, educates the public about how they can make a difference to hen welfare, and encourages support for the British egg industry. Its ultimate aim is to see consumers and food manufacturers buying only UK produced free range eggs, resulting in a strong British egg industry where all commercial laying hens enjoy a good quality life

Very disappointing. I saw the ad about the ex-batts needing new homes or they would go to slaughter. Emailed my regional co-ordinator. Emailed hen central. No reply after a week (fair enough - it's a charity). Rang them a total of 5 times. On the third time someone answered, took my details and still didn't call me back after 24 hours. I then rang again only to find that they would rather send birds to slaughter than allow me to re-home birds with a cockerel. Despite the fact that he's a Bantam and me offering to put saddles on the hens backs to protect them from spurs and also to help to keep them warm. I'm an experienced hen keeper - I've kept rescued birds as pets for over 10 years and I struggle to believe that these people actually care about hens!! They wouldn't even give them a chance to lead a happy life. Shame on you all. I guess working with these birds 24/7 desensitises you...
