There are 30,000,000 chickens in this country - 85% of these are 'living' in Battery Farms. 70% of the above are kept in sheds containing 20,000 birds or more, some up to 100,000. The minimum legal requirement of space for one bird is just under three quarters the size of an A4 sheet of paper. Most farms have 4 or 5 birds per cage. We find caring homes for thousands of commercial laying hens destined for slaughter each year and have hen collection points all over the country. We do not make a charge for the hens or their adoption, but we do welcome donations which go towards covering what we pay the farmers, vet fees, petrol, phone bills, trailers, equipment and feed as well as supporting our ongoing and very successful campaign work for a free range future. The average donation we receive is £3-4 per hen but any donation will be gratefully received.

Poultry Matters is a small family run business based in North Cumbria. Our small holding is situated on the foothills of the Lake District's Skiddaw mountain range. We are 30 minutes drive from the M6 motorway. Carlisle, Penrith, Keswick, the west coast and South West Scotland are no more than an hours' drive away. Like many others, we have been bitten by the poultry keepers bug. We started with a few ex-battery hens and six Black Rocks and now have over 80 breeding birds with at least two strains of each breed. We have four varieties of pure bred birds all bred and reared by ourselves on the farm.
