Smallholder Product ReviewsOver the coming months we are testing a number of products: As we are poultry keepers ourselves we thought the first place to start would be poultry. Although we are far from experts we can give an honest opinion of the products and services we have tested.
Herbal Pellets ( Internal Parasite Control ) We have been using Herbal Pellets for a couple of months now and the results really can only be qualified long term, however they do seem to have the desired effect. Being a 100% natural herbal formula there is no egg withdrawal period. It is easy to use by adding to your bird’s feed for three consecutive days each month. The Ingredients include: Sunflower oil, seaweed meal, dicalcium phosphate, allium sativum, cinnamomum zelandicum, mentha piperita, thymus vulgaris, galium aperine, capsicum minimum. This is a natural way to keep internal parasites under control on a long term basis. (well worth a try)
Emvelo Spray is applied after the poultry shed has been cleaned. Again it is a natural product and needs to be used in line with your cleaning routine. It is very easy to apply and without going into the technical jargon, it does seem to do what it claims. Our poultry house does seem to smell a lot less after using this product for 1 month. When cleaning we quickly spray the whole house including bedding. Emvelo say "that Spray assists in promoting a healthy environment. It contains the carrier oil, neem, which may help to naturally reduce the number of flies and mites" I must admit I have seen very little in the way of flies if any.
This is not a review on a product but a service. About a month ago we bought a new chicken, it was a brown silkie. Over a few days it started to develop flu like symptoms. Concerned about how ill it was getting, I personally rang the Chicken Vet helpline out of hours. Not knowing who I was, I must say the speed in which someone helped me was fantastic. (bear in mind it was out of hours) within two hours, I had the treatment to give to my chickens. Well done Chicken Vet and the service they offer!!
